Not yet looking for a job, but...
I was first planning to seriously look for jobs from December. But every time I talk with someone about my plans, they told me something like :
''You will find really easily.''
It is still too soon to be sure, but it seems like ''really easy'' means : people are coming for you ; or : each people you meet has a second level relation looking for a developer.
At the beginning
Saturday, I went to a meet up for Weekend founders : basically, there is a coworking space called BizDojo opened for free on Saturday for people who wants to come and work on their stuff.
I went there, because I wanted to met some tech people from Wellington, and also because I had some projects, technologies and tools I wanted to try.
That was a great working day for me : BizDojo is really a cool and quiet place to work on. I worked during the whole day on my project, and it has been a while since I could have done that.
Connecting people
And that's where I met Peter. Peter is the organiser of the meet up, and we talked a little about my plans here in New Zealand, my experiences and what I worked on so far.
After a little talking, he told me that he knew someone looking for Ruby programmers, and puts me in contact with her by email. Thanks Peter, it was really cool.
Job opportunities
I had and had been contacted by email by Sarah, who is a professional recruiters, connecting people and digital companies in Wellington.
We planned an interview which happened today, on the beginning of the afternoon. During this 30 minutes, she tried to profile me and determined my strength, weakness and motivations.
Even with my beginners' English skills, I assume that I have communicated what is the most important for me, and what I am looking for (vision and values).
She told me about PowerShop, who are actually looking for a senior Ruby developer, which I am not, so it surely will not do the trick.
But there are others companies looking for developers. I will have soon some news from her, because she wants to find first which enterprises suits me.
In conclusion
This recent opportunity came really soon regarding what I expected. But it is really a good chance to have a first serious contact with the labour market, and maybe a job.
I was surprised by the approach : Sarah took the time to define precisely what I am expecting for my job. Maybe it is some supply and demand rule : lot of awesome companies, small amount of developers, so we here can choose who and what for we want to spend time and energy.
My English is not a problem : I can understand people and be more or less understood. I think I was able to communicate (which is not only verbal) enough to let Sarah have a good idea of who I am.
