Leaving soon the hostel
On Friday, it will be three weeks that I am in New Zealand, and three week I an working for accommodation in the same hostel.
According to my plans, I will move Saturday (6th of December) to my next host in the Lower Hutt, near of Petone.
Because I have still nothing planned for after the 23rd of December, I booked on the hostel where I actually am. I will be working there again for accommodation at least two weeks from this date.
There will be a lot of woofers there for Christmas days, that will be awesome. I am just a little sad to miss secret Santa organised for the 18th.
English
Skills
Even if I feel dumb that I cruelly lack of vocabulary and I still can not make correct sentences with a complex syntax, I receive a pretty good feedback about my English skills, and accent !
That is really positive and motivating, considering the short amount of time I spent here.
Finally, I write more than I thought because I think it helps a lot to practice construction of complex syntax, and reading to learn vocabulary. Speaking of this, I read really slower than in French : especially because I can not read an English text without subvocalization.
Note
I read recently in an article:
« Language represents our view of the world, and knowing its limits helps us understand how our perception works. »
Some vocabulary nuances that we had in French simply does not exist in English. In consequence, two things I always considered as different (because they had two different names) are now an only one (because it is the same name to describe both).
Living in a environment speaking another language than our mother tongue one enriches our world vision and brings challenges to its understanding.
Looking for a flat
Even if I planned to come back to the hostel for Christmas, I am actually looking for a flat.
It seems easier to rent a flat here than in France : I do not need a job, neither parental guarantee if I do not earn enough money. Maybe it is because you have to pay weekly, and/or because there are less legal protections for the occupant.
There are essentially flat and house sharing in Wellington. It may vary between 3 to 6 rooms of what I saw, and that usually means a lot of people sharing the accommodation.
I would prefer to live independently and more isolated, but it could be a good first solution while I could get a job and plan for a longest term my staying in this country.
Speaking of jobs
I had been contacted by the recruiter there is now one week. A company seems to match my expectations so she will contact them to know if they are interested. I am actually waiting for news, and I should contact her tomorrow, because I also found on her site some opportunities that may interest me.
Lifestyle
Unordered list :
- Saturday, I went again to the co-working place BizDojo to work a little. This time, it was for the Librarybox.
- Two French girls had to pay for a private room in the hostel (which was full), where there is tea and a beautiful view on the bay. They proposed me a cup of tea at 10pm, the panorama was awesome !
- The hostel organised a staff party : free drinks at the hostel bar for 1 hour and half for woofers. That was fun. People are out on Sundays too.
- The supermarket I use to go is opened everyday, from 8 am until midnight. And there are two people per checkout : one to scan articles, the other to pack them. Maybe that is why the food is more expensive than in France : better product quality (in general, exception for some of their cheese), great service.
- I still run on the coast of the harbour. I am going farther and farther !
- One of my roomate bought some Christmas decorations for our room. We have now the most beautiful room of the hostel.
- Tonight, we cooked pasta carbonara with one of my Swedish roomate and two French friends. That was a pleasant and delicious shared moment. Next time, we hope that we will be able to do some « crêpes » !
